How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?
My product made use of conventions in a couple of different ways. One of the ways conventions were used was through the different shots and filming techniques included in the production. These included two shots, panning, medium-long shots, panning, and more. Other conventions that I made use of were costumes, editing techniques, and sets. Moreover, the social group that my product was intended to represent is young individuals who enjoy the yearly season of summer. This is seen within the video as the main individuals included in the production are young people doing activities related to the summer season such as going to the beach, the park, and the arcade. The use of Polaroids containing places and people in my music video also helps show that the video was aimed to represent young individuals since most of the memories people will remember throughout their lifetimes are made when they are young. However, my product was not made with the intention of representing any significant social issues since it was mostly made to include a fun and enjoyable song while portraying a story in the background. The only issue that my product could be shown to represent is the pain that all things in life must have an ending to them no matter how good they may seem. This is shown since the story behind the music video is someone missing the summer season and having a flashback to the various memories they’ve made at different places and with various people.
How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
My product engages with audiences because it allows them to relate to it in multiple ways compared to other similar products. One of the ways in which the audience can relate is with the message behind the music video being someone missing the feeling of summer and the memories made during this time. A large portion of the audience will be able to relate to the feeling of missing summer since this is the favorite season for many people. The audience will also be able to relate to this video since it was a production by a high school student and not a professional studio with a large budget. The viewers will relate because the creation of this product will be something that is more realistic for the audience to be able to make on their own. If this were a real media text, I would distribute it in multiple ways in order to ensure the most amount of views possible. The first way in which my product would be distributed is by releasing it onto YouTube since it is the most common platform for people to upload content and obtain a large number of views. I would also be uploading small snippets of the video onto platforms like TikTok and Instagram in order to pique the interest of more people and cause them to watch the full version on YouTube. To have more people see the production, I would share it on cable channels such as MTV as well.
How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
Throughout this project, I feel that my production skills have significantly improved compared to before. This project had to be an original production which meant everything had to be made from scratch. Because of this, I feel that it helped better my creativity which is something that I’ve always struggled with. Doing this project has also taught me many things. Better time management is one of the things that I learned to develop during this project since I had to figure out ways to fit time for filming into the schedules of my groupmates and me. The project also taught me more about the importance of teamwork. During this production, I had to learn how to work with others in order to get all of the filming and work done in time and properly. However, this didn’t prove to be much of a challenge as I already knew my groupmates on a personal level despite never working with them on a project. It instead provided me with knowledge about how to split up work between people. Another thing that this process helped me develop was my skills in making a production with limited guidelines since the video had to be original work. This had me learn different things such as how a storyboard is made and how to edit a video to look more professional. I was also able to develop my skills in using different filming techniques when recording various scenes and attempting to make them look more interesting.
How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?
In this project, I integrated technologies by using a variety of different tools to make the production. One of the main technologies that I made use of was my phone. I decided to use my phone over other technologies due to its wide range of uses such as its ability to easily have the same filming quality as a proper, more expensive camera. I also used my phone for editing whenever I could. However, for the editing portion of the production I preferred to use my computer since editing on a bigger screen felt much easier and the desktop version of the editing software I used was different than the mobile version. Furthermore, the editing software that I used during this project was called CapCut. I chose to use this software over others because it offers a vast range of features and its design is very user-friendly for people who have little to no experience with editing videos. When uploading this project online the software that I decided to use is Vimeo. I used this one over other video-uploading services such as YouTube because it ensured that my video would not be taken down for using a copyrighted song. For the blogging portion of the project, I chose to use the program known as Blogger made by Google. I decided to use this program because it was easy to use and it needed a Google account which meant that I did not need to create another account for something new.
